# Cooking steps:
01 - Preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C). Grease a medium baking dish with unsalted butter.
02 - Arrange half of the sliced potatoes in the baking dish. Layer half of the chopped onion, minced garlic, diced ham, and grated Gruyère cheese. Season with salt, black pepper, fresh thyme, and a pinch of nutmeg.
03 - Add the remaining potatoes, onion, ham, and Gruyère as a second layer. Repeat seasoning evenly.
04 - Pour heavy cream uniformly over the assembled layers. Dot the surface with remaining unsalted butter.
05 - Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 25 minutes. Remove the foil and continue baking for 15 minutes until the top is golden and bubbling.
06 - Allow the dish to rest for 5 minutes before serving. Optionally garnish with chopped fresh parsley.
